London There are still eight candidates in the race to succeed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The remaining applicants had received enough nominations to take part in the planned vote, the responsible party committee announced on Tuesday evening. The candidates included Foreign Minister Liz Truss and Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi, among others. Former Health and Finance Minister Sajid Javid has withdrawn his candidacy. Truss is considered the preferred candidate of the conservative base.

Johnson’s successor should be known on September 5th. On Monday, his Conservative Party announced the procedure and timetable for the election of the chairman by the members. He or she automatically heads the government as the Tories are the largest party in the House of Commons. A first vote is to take place on Wednesday and a second on Thursday.
