Earthquake in Turkey Not Commemorated at Berlin Film Festival

Speaking at the Berlin Film Festival, important names of Turkish cinema reacted to the fact that the earthquake was not mentioned at the festival.

The 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, caused great destruction in 10 provinces and caused the death of more than 40 thousand of our citizens. While the Ukrainian war and the protests in Iran were considered natural, the double earthquake, which was referred to as the disaster of the century, at the Berlin Film Festival not mentioned.

After the earthquakes were not mentioned within the festival program, the representatives of Turkish cinema reproach to Europe mentioned through. Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival director Ahmet Boyacıoğlu and artistic director Başak Emre reacted to the fact that nothing was said about the earthquake at the festival.

“The ceremony started with Ukraine, ended with Ukraine”

Ahmet Boyacıoğlu said that nothing about Turkey and the earthquake should be included in the ceremony.The opening ceremony of the festival started with Ukraine, ended with Ukraine and touched Iran. But I don’t think they are talking about Turkey.” he reacted.

Başak Emre said:I’m sorry that a meeting started by not talking about the earthquake while I was here, and unfortunately this is happening. We do not feel support on social media either.” he continued his reaction.

“We are foreigners to Europe”

Boyacıoğlu stated that besides the earthquake agenda, Turkey should not take part in the festival and other festivals in Europe. “To be honest, Europe is not very interested in Turkey. We are somehow foreign to Europe.Speaking as ”, Boyacıoğlu reminded that there was no Turkish jury in the Berlin Film Festival.
