Essentially, I found myself in an unexpected business activity. Things took an unexpected turn in a very short time. We have created a significant customer potential in the society. The situation was reinforced when I became a social media phenomenon and my number of followers reached 7 million. From time to time, I could not manage this spontaneous development well. I made some mistakes. I could not sustain growth of this scope. On the one hand, I received great love from the society and my followers. On the other hand, I also received reactions due to the mistakes I described. In this four-month period, I can understand it even better. If possible, when I am released, I will learn serious lessons and continue to do the right things, please my loved ones and create employment.

Dilan Polat spoke about the prison conditions as follows:

Prison conditions are of course not the same as outside. Our state is trying to provide a safe environment for detainees and prisoners as much as it can. They treat me pretty well. We do not eat anything other than prison food. In cases of illness, immediate intervention is provided. I now see the prison, where I have formed very close friendships, as a part of my country.

The only problem is that I miss my children so much. I hope to have healthy and free days. I want to work with a new perspective and excitement.

Dilan Polat’s statement about the investigation files opened against them was as follows:

We were lynched by a significant portion of social media regarding the investigation file. My constitutional rights were violated. My reputation and personality were played with. Early on, I realized that this was also affecting the investigation. Privacy has been violated… But as of today, I see that things have become clearer. As we know, I can say that we have not been involved in any crime other than some tax mistakes.

We have very little communication with my children and I feel very sad about this. I am in pain… I think our state and its aid should act as modernly as possible regarding children and pay attention to the constitutional principles regarding the protection of families and children.

There shouldn’t have been such a long secrecy order before the release. It was my natural right to be informed of the issues I was accused of and what the evidence was, and I waited for it to be turned into an indictment as soon as possible.

Dilan Polat said that she asked for help from higher authorities for the situation they were in:

I wrote a letter in my own handwriting to the President and the Minister of Justice. After consulting with my lawyer, I will decide whether to send it or share it with the public. What I explained in the letter is that the indictment should be prepared as soon as possible and our crime should be revealed.

I also want my followers to know that we did not commit the crimes we are alleged to have committed, and that I do not understand why I am here. I can’t explain to myself why I’m here when no one is being arrested solely for tax crimes.

Engin Polat spoke as follows about their situation:

Of the matters for which I was accused, the only mistakes I made were due to ignorance and lack of knowledge regarding taxes. For this reason, we applied to the prosecutor’s office and tax inspectors for effective repentance, which is my legal right. I will pay all my debts to the state, down to the penny. In fact, because of this mistake, I will be able to expand my business abroad and pay more taxes.

“I have no criminal connection or function. I am accused unjustly. Social media devastated us with its ‘hit the cloak’ mentality, but after a while the facts began to emerge. The prosecutor and the police did not collect anything in our favor; although the basis of our commercial activities in the ordinary course of trade, law and life could easily be put into the file, they were not considered in our favor. This has only been happening for 1.5 months.

This issue is an endless problem for all tradesmen, businessmen and commerce, not with the intention of committing a crime, but perhaps due to the conditions of the market. Maybe I came to the wrong conclusions about this problem myself, but now I feel embarrassed both commercially and emotionally.

Speaking about his situation in prison, Engin Polat said the following:

I read novels and books on management in prison. Also, I have been studying English for the last two months. I’ve progressed quite a bit. I stay alone in prison. In fact, if we were together with my father, we would be friends with each other. So time would pass more easily. Due to my father’s illness, I took care of him. It would be nice if such an opportunity was provided.

Of course, I know that food, heating and facilities in prison, just like life outside, are within the limits of our state’s capabilities. They treat me well. I have no complaints. I have had my hair cut to zero and I will calculate how long it will grow until I release it. I set a maximum time. I’m counting the dawn backwards. This is how I keep myself busy. I review my life and take notes. I identified where there were deficiencies.

I missed my children and my wife very much. I realized that it is not a lot of opportunities, but a peaceful life that is important. In fact, what is happening is ostensibly an investigation, but I have been evaluating for the last 2-3 weeks that it could provide us with an experience, a lesson, or advice. I watch political talk shows, morning shows that are against us, and documentaries.
