Cybersecurity face of war: Microsoft’s help to Ukraine!

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many countries and important organizations are taking steps to end the state of war as soon as possible. While the sanctions against Russia due to the occupation continue unabated, support for Ukraine is also increasing. Finally, one of these supports came from Microsoft.

Gesture from hackers to Ukraine: Russian networks are crashed!

Hacking attempts between Ukraine and Russia are growing. Hackers attack Russia in response to calls from the Ukrainian government.

Microsoft seizes seven domains used by Russia in cyber attacks

While the ugly face of war continues to show its effect, an intense conflict continues at the cyber security level. Ukraine is a Russian state-sponsored hacking group with links to the military intelligence agency GRU on the cyber side of the war. APT28 was under heavy attack. Microsoft recently stated that it has captured seven active domains that Russian cyber forces used in their cyberattacks against Ukraine.

The biggest support to Ukraine came from the technology company Microsoft. According to the company’s statement, Ukrainian institutions and media organizations were the target of Russian cyber forces. Tom Burt, Corporate Vice President of Customer Security and Trust at Microsoft, said:

On Wednesday, April 6, we received a court order allowing us to take control of seven internet domains that Strontium used to carry out these attacks. We’ve since redirected these domains to a Microsoft-controlled sinkhole, allowing us to reduce Strontium’s current use of these domains and enable victim notifications.

The case of APT28, one of the most notorious Russian state-sponsored cybercrime groups, is quite bloated. The group, which is frequently on the agenda with its attacks on the German and Norwegian parliaments, the French TV station TV5Monde, the White House, NATO, the Democratic National Committee, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, continues its efforts actively in the war.
