Criminal proceedings against Prigozhin are probably still ongoing – Putin is said to be receiving support from Iran

Pistorius: Wagner boss in Belarus not necessarily a threat

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has expressed caution in the face of concerns in the Baltics about a visit to Belarus by the Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin.

When asked about possible new dangers for the NATO country Lithuania, the SPD politician told ZDF’s “heute journal” on Monday: “That depends on whether the reports are correct or whether they are just rumors about where Prigozhin is actually located his troops.”

In the interview during his trip to Lithuania, Pistorius added that even if the head of the Wagner group of mercenaries were in Belarus, “that would not necessarily mean a threat, but could also have a completely different background”.

One moves in the realm of speculation, warned Pistorius. What is decisive, however, is that the Baltic states, and above all Lithuania, are very worried. “The situation is tense anyway, and Lithuania is particularly exposed.”
