Counter-offensive runs slower than hoped

Russia allegedly shoots down Ukrainian drones near Moscow

Russia shot down two drones near military warehouses on the outskirts of the capital, according to Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov. Russian media reported that debris from a third drone had been discovered about 20 kilometers away. No damage or injuries were reported. The Russian Defense Ministry said it was “an unsuccessful attempt at a terrorist attack” by Ukraine.

Ukraine initially did not comment on the reports of the drones. She does not normally confirm an attack on Russian territory. However, Ukrainian officials have argued that because of Russia’s war of aggression, Ukraine has the right to attack any target.

Since February, Ukrainian drones are said to have approached the Russian capital Moscow repeatedly. In May there were two drone attacks on Moscow.

According to a governor appointed by Moscow, train traffic on the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in violation of international law, was temporarily interrupted on Wednesday. Sergei Axyonov did not give the reason for this. Russian media reported that rails had been blown up overnight in an alleged act of sabotage. A few hours later, it was said that train services had resumed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Ukrainian troops were reforming after what he said had failed to counter-offensive in which they had suffered heavy casualties. Possibly they were preparing for new attacks on Russian positions. More Avangard hypersonic gliders, with which some Russian ICBMs are equipped, should be deployed and the new Sarmat ICBM, codenamed “Satan” by NATO allies, should soon enter service. The Russian military will also use more drones, Putin told graduates of a military academy.
