Vienna Ten days after it began, the lockdown in Austria is taking effect. The paralysis of social life has resulted in the number of new infections being halved every day. In addition, the number of reproductions fell to just under 1, which slowed the exponential growth. “The peak has been reached,” said simulation expert Nikolas Popper at the beginning of last week.

However, the numbers have been showing a slight downward trend since the lockdown began, which experts interpret to mean that the previous measures, including exit restrictions for unvaccinated people, have already had an effect. Austria has had high vaccination rates since the beginning of November, mainly because of the third bites, with Friday even being the record day of the entire campaign.

A recently published evaluation of cell phone data shows, however, that mobility did not decrease as much in the fourth lockdown as in the previous one: it was reduced by 18 percent, compared to 40 percent in March 2020.
