Berlin Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has named the capture of the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbass as a war goal and as an “unconditional priority”. In the past few days, Russian troops have gained ground there. The Ukrainian defenders face military problems.

The EU, meanwhile, is at odds over what should take precedence: helping Ukraine until it retakes all occupied territories, or a ceasefire and negotiations that could result in territory ceding to Russia.
