China’s unknown influence on the German economy

These are tense times when Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz will set off for China this Thursday together with a business delegation. Experts are observing President Xi Jinping’s claim to power, which is increasingly being publicly postulated, with concern. The participation of the Chinese group Cosco in a Hamburg port terminal is still under criticism.

The debate about Chinese involvement and a possible dependence on China could now get an additional boost: According to information from the Handelsblatt, the Communist Party (KP) is exerting influence on German companies in a way that has not been known until now. For the first time, the Handelsblatt has information that shows how the KP influences the management of so-called party cells in a Dax group in China – right down to decisions about business models and location decisions.

The establishment of these party cells is mandatory for companies in China, but so far it has been said that they should organize leisure activities. But: “The state leadership influences individual party members,” says Handelsblatt correspondent Dana Heide in an interview with Ina Karabasz. In today’s episode she talks about the communist party and Chinese attempts to influence German companies and infrastructure.

Also: In 2021, almost a quarter of those in employment in Germany worked at least occasionally from home. Many companies want to offer home office again this winter or even encourage it in view of the energy crisis. Handelsblatt editor Franziska Telser explains what additional costs workers could face for working from home in winter.
