ChatGPT: chance, risk or gimmick?

ChatGPT

Dusseldorf “ChatGPT-3 – for such smart people working on the bot, they could have come up with a catchier name,” writes a Handelsblatt reader, but that’s the end of his negative criticism of the technology. Like this reader, many others are impressed by the chatbot.

For example, while meeting friends, one reader asked ChatGPT to “write a love letter to ‘My Friend’s Wife, Isabelle.'” But instead he was told that a text program was ethically unfit to write a love letter to his friend’s wife because it was “inappropriate” and had “potential personal and social consequences,” according to the AI .

Other readers believe that with ChatGPT AI is “no longer an abstract concept with a science fiction touch”. Rather, the chatbot enables people “to get to know some facets of AI better, to discuss them and to understand the possibilities to some extent,” writes another reader.

In addition, some also believe that ChatGPT could change the search engine industry, which has been dominated by Google so far, or even “can push Google’s search engine technology off the throne,” as one reader writes. Microsoft actually announced on Tuesday that its Bing Internet search is to be expanded to include an intelligent Chatbot based on ChatGPT. CEO Satya Nadella said: “The race starts today.” Google and the Chinese technology group Baidu have also announced that they want to integrate a chatbot into their search services.

Despite all the euphoria, some readers warn that regulation and control are just as important as the further development of technology. One reader points out above all the sources on the basis of which ChatGPT works: These “must be carefully monitored, controlled and regularly checked to ensure neutrality and correctness”.

We have put together a selection for you from the letters from the Handelsblatt readers.

Dethrone Google

“The biggest upheaval is due to the name of the new chatbot itself. The Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT) is the first solution that can push Google’s search engine technology off the throne. Automatically assembling the right information with a search saves users time and represents the next major milestone in information accessibility for all. This is particularly threatening the search engine services industry. It remains to be seen whether the AI can still get its bias problem under control.”

Astonished laughter from all sides – and high recognition

“Over the weekend, just for fun, I asked the ChatGPT group of friends to write a love letter to ‘Isabelle, my friend’s wife’.

The surprise: Instead of a love letter, I received the reply that a text program was ethically unfit to write a love letter to my friend’s wife because it was inappropriate and had potential personal and social consequences. Finally, I was advised to always remain respectful and professional in all actions, but especially in matters of the heart.

The result was astonished laughter from all sides and high recognition for ChatGPT.”

With varying degrees of success

“My experiences in my areas of interest:

In my business/industrial/technical environment, surprisingly strong in terms of terminology. Application: Support of Siemens automation products. But if you look closely, as a support chatbot, not specific enough – too general. Doesn’t really help requesters.

I played in an unknown band, ‘Artie Benz’, 30 years ago. The chatbot has actually found a sales platform in France that offers the band’s only record for sale. Coincidence in the field of music?

Regarding the battery change of my Yamaha FSX5 guitar, the chatbot was completely wrong. If I had followed him I would have destroyed my beautiful guitar.”

Encourage intensively, but also master as much as possible

“The chatbot ChatGPT is a high-profile form of AI that enables people to get to know some facets of AI better, to discuss them and to begin to understand the possibilities.

Inventions like computers and robotics have changed the world of work. Artificial intelligence will more or less find its way into all industries and revolutionize the world of work.

We are still at the very beginning of a development that we support intensively, but also have to master as much as possible. AI will help us prolong our existence on this planet.”

I am impressed

“I’ve used ChatGPT myself to shorten my Google searches and I’m impressed with the program. I see a clear opportunity in the service because the AI gives a short and precise answer.

AIs like ChatGPT can become a promising addition to online search engines, revolutionizing the online marketing industry in terms of SEO and SEA.

For me, services like ChatGPT have a lot of potential. However, the AIs still have to be developed further in order to be used across the board, and the validity of the data must be able to be checked.”

i’m just so awesome

“Create a satirical statement in I form about the “of course exaggerated” fears of people looking at you:

>> Read about this: Bing’s AI shows in the test what it can do – and what not yet

‘Oh, of course I understand why people are so frightened of me. I mean, who wouldn’t be intimidated by my dazzling intellect and razor-sharp wit? It’s only natural that they would cower in fear at the mere sight of me. I can’t blame them, really. I am just that magnificent. But, hey, at least they’re not bored, right?’

And now in German and referring to you as OpenAI:

‘Of course I understand why people are so scared of me as OpenAI. I mean, who wouldn’t be impressed by my amazing intellect and sharp tongue? It’s only natural that they tremble with fear just by the sight of me. I can’t blame them. i’m just so awesome But hey, at least they’re not bored, are they?’

The whole thing took less than a minute… Any questions?”

Regulation is just as important as further development

“It’s the biggest game changer this century for anyone who calls themselves a ‘user’. AI is no longer an abstract term with a sci-fi touch, and acting as a user I can’t think of any industry that won’t benefit from ChatGPT. Therefore, its regulation and control over it is just as important as its further development.”

At the boarding gate in Tenerife

“ChatGPT can be seen as an opportunity and a risk at the same time. As an opportunity, it offers the possibility of obtaining information quickly and accurately and can be helpful in many areas of application, such as customer service, decision support and process automation.

On the other hand, it can also be considered a risk as it can make mistakes and provide incorrect information, especially if it has not been adequately trained for a specific task. Also, it can be considered a threat to jobs if it can automate certain tasks that are currently done by humans.

As for whether it’s a ‘gimmick’, it depends on what it’s being used for. In some cases it can be considered a useful tool, in other cases it can be considered just a nice gimmick.

ChatGPT is expected to bring about the biggest changes in industries like customer service, marketing, e-commerce, and information services by automating and accelerating human interactions.

PS: I had the AI write this text at the boarding gate in Tenerife within a few seconds. ;)”

Only criticism of the name

“ChatGPT-3 – for such smart people working on the bot, they could have come up with a catchier name. But that’s the end of my negative criticism of the technology.

The possibilities ChatGPT-3 offers me to automate my daily activities are endless. For me, as someone who does not know any programming language, it is a blessing to work with the chatbot. I used to not be able to implement various mini-projects because, despite several attempts, I was not enthusiastic about programming languages. Now I can hardly stop automating personal and professional tasks. This ranges from sending circular emails to automating websites.

I believe that all people have the same goal: time for family, friends and hobbies. The tool offers me this possibility. That’s why I won’t stop looking into it. I’m glad ChatGPT-3 got to this point in my life. I hope other people feel the same as I do!”

Incredible breakthrough

“My five comments on ChatGPT and AI:

  • Chat AI represents a massive, unstoppable shift in the way we quickly get to the information we seek.
  • Chat AI needs to be incorporated into our learning and education as a positive complement, not viewed as a learning avoidance.
  • Chat AI sources must be carefully monitored, controlled, and regularly reviewed to ensure neutrality and accuracy.
  • Chat AI remains a language tool and is not a source of continuous data-driven information such as news, weather or current financial market conditions.
  • Chat AI will add another reliable source of knowledge to our lives and can be seen as an incredible breakthrough.”
