Washington, NY Olaf Scholz and Joe Biden are in the East Room, the large representative room in the White House. After the two heads of state exchanged the usual pleasantries after their meeting, a US journalist asked Biden whether Germany was still a reliable partner in the Ukraine crisis. “There is no need to regain confidence,” Biden said. “Germany has the complete trust of the United States. There is no doubt about the partnership,” said the US President.

Two questions were at the heart of the Chancellor’s first trip to the US: How should the West react to an imminent invasion of Russia after Russian President Vladimir Putin has deployed 120,000 Russian soldiers on the Ukrainian border? And will the new chancellor manage to dispel criticism of his hitherto cautious Russia policy in Washington?
