cLabs, the core developer of Celo Blockchain, proposed to develop Layer-2 Blockchain using OP Stack. The firm evaluated various scaling technologies over an eight-month period. After this evaluation phase, Celo selected Optimism’s OP Stack for development.
Celo chose Optimism after long research!
cLabs, the core developer of Celo, has floated a proposal to build its Ethereum Layer-2 solution on Stack. This proposal received community approval in a governance vote last July. This marked a major change in Celo’s evolution. Currently, the team is working to develop Layer 2 using OP Stack within the Optimism ecosystem. OP Stack is a development software stack that offers developers the ability to launch their own Layer-2 Blockchains.
In making this decision, Celo evaluated various scaling technologies and software packages, including Arbitrum Orbit, zkSync’s ZK Stack, and Polygon CDK. Celo decided on OP Stack after an eight-month evaluation and testing process. cLabs aims to proceed with plans to launch a test-net in summer 2024 following a community vote.
What influenced the election?
Optimism will migrate to Optimism’s Superchain ecosystem. This integration will include Celo’s OP Mainnet, Base, Zora, Mode and others. A digital identity network called Worldcoin is also developing a Layer 2 network on OP Stack. Blockchains in the Optimism ecosystem use a scaling solution called optimistic rollups. This technology aggregates Ethereum transactions in a secondary off-chain layer. Thus, it provides developers with cheaper transaction costs and scalability.
cLabs stated that Celo’s transition to OP Stack-based Layer 2 will focus on improving the performance of the network while preserving its distinctive features. Recommended improvements include reducing block time to 2 seconds and a 50% increase in throughput. Celo is an Ethereum Virtual Machine compatible Blockcain. Meanwhile, it hosts popular Ethereum-based dApps such as Uniswap and Sushiswap.
Optimism has triumphed once again!
During the selection process, cLabs was considering whether to distribute OP Stack, Arbitrum Orbit, zkSync on the ZK Stack or Polygon CDK. Celo ultimately decided that OP Stack fit their needs. In particular, the project notes that it may be compatible with components from other layer-2 teams, including Polygon’s Type 1 prover. “I think even some of the things we’ve learned in other stacks will be helpful as the entire architecture is built and deployed over time,” said Rene Reinsberg, co-founder of Celo and president of the Celo Foundation.
