Berlin With a view to the spreading new corona variant Omikron, calls for further pandemic measures are getting louder. “Countries like the Netherlands, which are now going into a lockdown, suggest that minor measures are not enough,” said Green health expert Janosch Dahmen to Handelsblatt.

The country has had a strict lockdown since Sunday. “Shutting down non-essential retail stores can be just as much an instrument as industry-wide company holidays into January to get Omikron under control.”

For this, the Infection Protection Act would have to be changed again, which the traffic light parties last tightened at the beginning of December. Comprehensive closings of the retail trade are not possible with the current rules.

Dahmen also warned of massive staff shortages in areas of critical infrastructures due to the new Omikron variant. “We have to be prepared for the fact that a large number of staff will be absent due to illness in areas of the critical infrastructure,” said Dahmen.
