Berlin The Ministry of Defense is apparently interested in taking over the Rostock location of the insolvent MV shipyards. According to a “Spiegel” report, this emerges from a confidential letter from the head of the armaments department, which the news magazine has received.

With the insolvency of the MV shipyards, the Bundeswehr has “a unique opportunity to take over parts of the existing shipyard infrastructure,” writes Admiral Carsten Stawitzki. With the war in Ukraine, the “consequent increase in the material operational readiness of the Bundeswehr gained more importance than ever”.

Industry groups confirmed the Bundeswehr’s interest in the Handelsblatt. The shipyard is strategically located and Rostock is the headquarters of the Navy.

If the deal goes through, the corvettes from the nearby naval base in Warnemünde could be regularly serviced there, writes the “Spiegel”. After consultation with the ministry, the insolvency administrator has now agreed to an extension of the deadline for a Bundeswehr offer until the beginning of May. The insolvency administrator initially did not comment on the Handelsblatt.

According to industry circles, there is no offer from the Bundeswehr. However, representatives of the armed forces were on site to take a look at the site, it said.

As the “Spiegel” further reports, according to the Bundeswehr’s plans, the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks should take over the existing infrastructure and then rent it out to the ministry. Of the approximately 800 employees in the previous transfer company, around 500 could be taken over by the Bundeswehr as employees or civil servants in the long term, it said.

MV shipyards, which belong to the Asian Genting group and have locations in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund, filed for bankruptcy in January. Insolvency proceedings were opened at the beginning of March.
