BSI considers hacking possible

Dusseldorf, Berlin The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) does not rule out a hacker attack as the cause of the disruption to the remote maintenance of thousands of wind turbines. According to an internal management report that the Handelsblatt was able to see, the BSI has an evaluation of the ongoing analyzes from a “reliable source”. Accordingly, “far-reaching effects that could be caused by a cyber attack are conceivable.”

Coinciding with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the satellite network KA-SAT went down at 4 a.m. on Thursday last week, as the US operator Viasat informed its partners. In Germany, the Enercon company is affected by the disruption. It announced on Monday that 5,800 wind turbines with an output of eleven gigawatts were affected. A spokesman said the company was working “at full speed” on a solution.
