Biden is encountering resistance in his own ranks with a Fed candidate

Washington One of US President Joe Biden’s high-ranking appointments for the Federal Reserve has met with resistance. Biden’s party colleague, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, announced Monday that he could not support Biden’s nominee for chief banking regulator Sarah Bloom Raskin. The background is, among other things, their previous public statements on energy policy.

Biden nominated Raskin for the Federal Reserve’s top banking supervisor in mid-January. The Senate would have to approve it. In the Chamber of Congress, however, the majorities are so tight that Biden’s 50 Democrats have to vote as one in order to be able to push through a project – provided that the Republicans block it as a whole.
