Better than Hubble! DAG Telescope gets its huge mirror

As a result of the project, which was first implemented by Atatürk University, it was started to be built in 2012 at an altitude of 3,170 meters in the Palandöken district of Erzurum. Eastern Anatolia Observatory Europe’s largest DAG telescope placed. Finally, a special mirror was placed. Here are the details…

The 4-meter mirror brought from Russia has been placed for the DAG Telescope!

The countdown has begun for the Eastern Anatolian Observatory, or DAG Telescope, which will be the largest in Europe. It is true that the project has been on a semi-pendent stage for the last few years, as it takes time to source the huge size of made-to-order lenses from abroad.

If we look in a little more detail, the lenses of this telescope were specially produced in Italy. The 4-meter-long mirror with a special coating, which was brought to our country in July and is currently placed on the telescope, was also brought from Russia.

James Webb, who is stated to have detected a new galactic center, imaged the rainbow knot that existed 11.5 billion years ago.

In other words, the latest technology products from all over the world were gathered at the request of scientists. In this way, Turkey’s Europe’s largest infrared telescope was established. However, it should be noted that this device is not yet active.

It was originally scheduled to become operational in 2020. However, problems such as the pandemic caused the entire operation to sag. For this reason, its opening was postponed first to 2021 and then to 2022. It seems that the promise of 2022 will be kept for the telescope, the first tests of which started in August.

For those who want to visit this observatory early, a sky observation event was held on 22-23 July in the Palandöken district of Erzurum, in other words, at the location of the Eastern Anatolia Observatory. You can watch this event, in which we also participated, via the link below.
