Frankfurt For the time being, the large German private banks will continue to issue Girocards with a Maestro function for international payments. There has been no change at Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank and Hypo-Vereinsbank (HVB) – and no concrete announcements either. From July, the savings banks will no longer equip the Girocard, often referred to by its old name “EC card”, with Maestro, but with the additional function Mastercard or Visa.
On request, Deutsche Bank stated: The money house will issue Girocard/Maestro cards with the known functions until further notice and also in July.
At Commerzbank, too, new customers and customers who want a replacement card “currently continue to receive the Girocard with the Maestro logo”. Neither financial institution has announced how long Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank will retain the Maestro function.
