Argentina’s Capital Buenos Aires Announces Its Important Initiative For Ethereum (ETH): It Will Be A First!

Buenos Aires Will Be One of the First Cities to Officially Run an Ethereum Node

Buenos Aires will be one of the first cities in the world to install Ethereum nodes or a computer running Ethereum client software by the government.

Fernandez added that the deployment of nodes will be carried out under a regulatory sandbox approved by the Buenos Aires legislature in 2021.

Through the Sandbox, the government of Buenos Aires will call on interested parties to contribute to the deployment of nodes.

Fernandez did not specify how many nodes the city will install, but said they will be hosted in “world-class” data centers owned by the Buenos Aires government.

This is not Buenos Aires’ first attempt at cryptocurrencies. Fernández said in March that they started working on TangoID, a blockchain-based digital identity platform to give residents control over their personal data. He added that the platform will be operational in January 2023.

Fernández stated in his presentation on Thursday that TangoID will initially be affiliated with Starknet.

In April, Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta announced that the city would allow taxes to be paid using cryptocurrencies. At the time, Larreta announced that the government would not buy cryptocurrencies directly from citizens, but would instead receive Argentine pesos through conversions by crypto companies.
