Are football stocks more than just speculation for fans?

Dusseldorf For many critics, the World Cup in Qatar is a prime example of how money can ruin football: empty ranks at the opening game on Sunday, reports of bought fans and allegations of corruption surrounding the award process overshadow the start of the first “Winter World Cup” in the desert emirate.

Professional football has long since become a billion-dollar business – on the one hand, this applies to players who are transferred from one club to the next for hundreds of millions of euros. On the other hand, this also applies to fans, who can now take the shares of their favorite club into their portfolio. But do football stocks offer serious return opportunities or are they no more than highly speculative investment opportunities for die-hard fans?

“In the past, football stocks were actually more for fans,” says Marcus Silbe, head of the analysis company FMR Frankfurt Main Research in the new episode of Handelsblatt Today. But the trading volume and investor interest have increased significantly in recent years. That’s why you can say that the return expectations have changed.

There are currently only two listed football clubs in Germany, Borussia Dortmund and SpVgg Unterhaching. From a purely sporting point of view, however, Silbe sees other potential candidates for an IPO: “These include teams like Borussia Mönchengladbach, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen.”
