Apple brings NFC payment system

Thanks to the new payment method that Apple is working on, Apple aims to enable people who already use iPhone and iPad to use the NFC-based system without the need for any hardware. Of course, this feature will also be offered on new future devices.

With this new NFC-based payment system, Apple wants to upgrade Square’s hardware by integrating touch-and-pay terminal technology directly into the iPhone using the built-in NFC chip. So this means that small businesses can accept tap-and-pay payments without any external hardware.

It looks like this feature will also work with Apple Pay. That is, it will allow users to tap their iPhone to the back of another iPhone to pay. In addition, it will be able to identify credit cards to devices, just as we saw on the Android side. In this way, all POS devices that accept contactless payments will accept Apple payments without the need for additional hardware.

Of course, it is not yet known whether the company plans to partner with an existing payment network for this feature or launch it alone. It’s also unclear whether it will be branded as part of Apple Pay. But it is expected that they will all gather under one roof.

Yesterday, iOS 15.3 was released to the general public. Therefore, iOS 15.4 beta testing is expected to start as soon as possible. In addition, the company may start to offer this feature thanks to a software feature that it will bring with iOS 15.4 in the coming months. But it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that this feature has been delayed to iOS 16, depending on the deals.

Of course, Apple did not start work on this service yesterday. The company’s efforts to this end came after it acquired Mobeewave for approximately $100 million in 2020. Prior to that, Mobeewave was marketing itself as the way to seamlessly accept credit card payments with a tap of your phone. In other words, we can say that this new feature is just around the corner.
