Berlin, Dusseldorf For ten years, Lars-Hendrik Röller was the top economic adviser to former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). He is now a professor at the Berlin business school ESMT and chairman of the “Berlin Global Dialogue” conference, which will take place from September 28 to 29, 2023 and is dedicated to geoeconomic issues.

In the Handelsblatt interview, the economist urges a different approach to China. Röller thinks it’s right that the G7 countries want to control domestic investments in the People’s Republic more closely. “If you really want to make a difference in China, you have to act from a position of strength.”

However, the basic prerequisite for this is economic strength. For this, Germany and the EU would have to become faster and get the high energy prices under control. Röller also admits his own mistakes: “We weren’t fast enough in expanding renewable energies.” It was also a mistake to prematurely shut down the nuclear power plants.
