An expropriation of Gazprom and Rosneft cannot be ruled out

Berlin Plans to nationalize the German subsidiaries of Russian energy companies meet with approval in the coalition. “The situation is serious and requires extraordinary measures,” said Bernd Westphal, economic policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, the Handelsblatt.

The government has to do everything to organize a stable supply for the country. “Article 14 of the Basic Law gives us in Parliament the framework to create the legal basis for necessary measures,” said Westphal. If the use of property no longer serves the public good, the instrument of expropriation with compensation must also be examined.

The SPD politician is alluding to the accusation that Gazprom Germania, the German subsidiary of the Russian Gazprom group, is using its gas storage facilities improperly; the levels of storage are kept artificially low in order to aggravate the tight supply situation, so the accusation goes.
