Elon Musk will bring internet to Tonga with Starlink
Due to the volcanic eruption in Tonga and the tsunami that followed, the only cable connecting it to the internet was damaged, along with many other things in the country consisting of 169 islands. Currently, the repair of the submarine cable in question continues. However, Elon Musk reached out to the country’s emergency request for help, which has a population of more than 100 thousand.
Some politicians in the region were making public calls after the disaster on January 15, asking Elon Musk if he could use Starlink internet satellites to restore Tonga’s internet connection.
Upon this, Elon Musk asked the people of Tonga whether it was important for SpaceX to send Starlink terminals, along with his social media post. Shortly thereafter, a group of Starlink engineers set out for Tonga’s neighboring country, Fiji, to build a Starlink Gateway ground station.
The first news on the matter came via Fiji Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who retweeted a tweet saying SpaceX’s Starlink engineering team is working to reconnect Tonga to the world.
The ultimate goal of SpaceX’s Starlink internet service, which was launched last year, is actually to address countries like Tonga. Regardless of your location, the infrastructure of the country or the climate of the region, if you have satellite internet service, it is sufficient to adjust your dish antenna.
