“A question of war and peace”: Is climate protection crisis prevention?

Frankfurt Water scarcity, food shortages, the increase in storm and flood disasters – these are all consequences of climate change that people are already feeling directly. And these consequences also have consequences: A scarcity of resources often leads to disputes, conflicts or even wars.

The SPD politician Heiko Maas explicitly warned in 2019, when he was Federal Foreign Minister, of the danger of “climate wars”. In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, he said: “Climate change is no longer just an ecological challenge for mankind. It is more and more a question of war and peace. “

But how exactly does climate change fuel wars and conflicts? How is this dynamic changing the international security structure? And what approaches are there for a foreign and security policy that takes sustainability criteria into account?

Kira Vinke, Head of the Center for Climate and Foreign Policy at the German Society for Foreign Policy and co-chair of the Advisory Council of the Federal Government on Civilian Crisis Prevention and Peacebuilding, answers these questions in the current podcast episode.
