Berlin Friedrich Merz wants to rebuild the CDU: As the Handelsblatt learned from party circles, the designated chairman will largely re-fill the federal headquarters. In the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus, department heads and divisional managers should make room for fresh minds. Among other things, his previous spokesman for the CDU’s Economic Council, Armin Peter, is to head the party’s communications department in the future.
Since the great majority of the members voted for Merz as the new CDU boss (62.1 percent), the 66-year-old Sauerlander has been preparing everything behind the scenes his new job. The 1001 delegates at the virtual federal party conference on January 21st have to formally confirm it.
After three years of power struggle and a crashing Bundestag election, Merz now wants to trim the party for opposition in no time at all. The government-loyal “event agency” – as Merz once disrespectfully called the headquarters – should be capable of campaigning, react to the new traffic light coalition, but also set its own topics.
