Dusseldorf For Germany’s largest carmaker, Volkswagen, its presence in the Chinese province of Xinjiang has long been a reputational risk. There are credible reports of human rights violations and forced labor from the region inhabited by the Uyghur ethnic group.
Only at the annual general meeting in mid-May did activists protest loudly against VW’s activities in Xinjiang. Investors have been calling for an independent investigation for some time. VW now wants to comply with this wish.
As the Handelsblatt learned from group circles, the car manufacturer is currently examining a so-called external audit for the controversial location in northwest China. The first steps should already be prepared, said a person familiar with the process.
