Announcing that it will shrink in the past days, Microsoft came up with a new announcement. Stating that it will narrow its Metaverse targets, Microsoft announced that it will close its sub-company called AltspaceVR.
Microsoft is shutting down Metaverse company AltspaceVR
AltspaceVR, which was acquired by Microsoft in 2017, is known for the technologies it has developed for the Metaverse world. Stating that it will focus on the Mesh platform, the company will end the activities of AltspaceVR on March 10, 2023.
Mesh is described as a collaboration and communication platform developed by Microsoft. Mesh, which aims to combine the company’s holographic virtual collaboration between multiple devices such as VR headsets, AR, laptops or smartphones, will work integrated with Microsoft Teams.
“We look forward to what’s to come, including the launch of Microsoft Mesh, a new platform for connectivity and collaboration that starts by enabling workplaces around the world. In the short term, we are focusing our VR efforts on workplace experiences. Over time, we hope to expand consumer experiences for good.” made statements.
The news of the shutdown comes after Microsoft confirmed it would lay off 10,000 employees by the end of March. According to Windows Central, Microsoft plans to lay off the entire AltspaceVR team as part of the restructuring.
In the report published by Bloomberg, the company announced that the HoloLens team has also reduced the number of employees. However, in 2022, Microsoft is also known to abandon its plans for a new HoloLens device.
