Dusseldorf If you want to visit Germany’s only oil rig, you have to adhere to the strictest conditions. Not only a current Covid test and an FFP2 mask are still mandatory here. Every visitor has to watch a nearly 20-minute security video before being allowed to board the ferry in Cuxhaven, which translates to the island called “Mittelplate”. Also required: several hours of survival training to prevent drowning in an accident. Even if the island is in the Wadden Sea and is therefore often dry.
The operating company Wintershall Dea is proud of how safe and clean its oil production on “Mittelplate” is. There are hardly any accidents, never leaks, according to the employees on the platform. And yet “Mittelplate” could hardly be more controversial.
