Berlin The material shortage in German industry only improved slightly in October. A good 70 percent of the companies complained about bottlenecks and problems in the procurement of preliminary products and raw materials and thus seven percentage points less than in September, as the Munich-based Ifo Institute announced on Wednesday for a survey.
“But we cannot speak of relaxation,” said Ifo expert Klaus Wohlrabe. “Especially because the companies expect the bottlenecks to persist well into the new year.” According to the survey, industrial companies assume on average that the problems will continue for eight months.
The chemical industry even expects a period of ten months. The automotive industry reports similar values. The food industry expects the shortest shortage period of 5.5 months.
The manufacturers of electrical equipment are particularly affected: 90 percent report problems with the procurement of materials. The scarcity in the auto industry is similar. In mechanical engineering it is 81 percent.

Among the food manufacturers, the share is 51 percent, an increase of six points. According to the survey, the situation has eased somewhat in most other sectors. Because of the ongoing delivery problems, many companies continued to plan to turn the price screw. “We see the price increases spread through the entire economy,” said Wohlrabe.
The higher prices are meanwhile also affecting German inflation as a whole. This climbed to 4.5 percent in October, the highest value since 1993.
