Berlin Michael Kiel worked as an investment banker for 30 years – a job that is actually considered to be particularly stressful. But Kiel experienced it the other way around. “I went to the office in the morning and it was clear to me that this day would not bring anything useful either. The tasks were completed quickly, I artificially lengthened projects.” Nevertheless, in the evenings he felt completely exhausted, suffered from insomnia and was unmotivated – as if burned out.
Kiel suffered from a bore-out. Experts speak of this when employees feel permanently underchallenged at work. The consequences of the syndrome can be devastating – not only for those affected, but also for companies. According to estimates by the Swiss management consultants Peter Werder and Philippe Rothlin, the subsequent costs of a bore-out in Germany are up to 250 billion euros.
