18 articles were accepted under the Social Media Law!

Towards the end of last May, the Social Media Law was presented to the parliament. The bill, which passed the commissions, was supposed to be finalized within 45 days, but it was decided to be postponed. However, after the parliament was opened, it came to the agenda again unexpectedly and the 19th article is currently being discussed.

18 of the 40 articles under the Social Media Law were accepted!

The Social Media Law was first submitted to the parliament on May 26, 2022. On the same day, it was decided to add the crime of publicly disseminating misleading information to the Turkish Penal Code No. 5237. However, it was stated that criminal sanctions would be imposed on broadcasting organizations and individuals who do not reflect the truth and make false news. The maximum penalty will be from 1 to 3 years in prison.

Of course, although the Social Media Law seems to affect only the organizations that make news on the internet, there are many journalists and publishers who share and broadcast their news on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. It should also be noted that citizens are also involved in the same process.

Retail markets continue to surprise. We examined the fiber boat model sold by the A101 at the price of a smartphone.

Therefore, anyone who spreads false news or shares misleading information on the Internet is sentenced to prison. It should be noted that this includes people who do not reflect the truth or make manipulative posts on their social media accounts.

But let me point out that there are some reservations about this. Because the red lines of the situation called fake news have not been determined yet. In other words, it is not known which news and shares will be included or how the decision will be made in cases that remain in the gray area.

In addition, there is a great uncertainty about who will determine the incident according to what authority and criteria, and what will be taken into account in case of penal action since there is no precedent decision. For this reason, it should be noted that many journalists and citizens expressed their reservations that their freedom of expression could be restricted.
