Berlin Light and shadow are often close together at Deutsche Bahn. On the outward journey to Munich, the train manager is happy about something that should actually be a matter of course: “The train from Hamburg to Munich is rolling into Munich to the minute,” the conductor cheers and lets all passengers share in the miracle via announcement: “ I haven’t seen that in a long time.”

But on the way back to Berlin, the summer fairy tale is already over: The ICE runs from the Bavarian to the federal capital with only one train instead of two, and to make matters worse, two cars are blocked because the air conditioning is on strike. In Erfurt, the passengers then wait another hour for the new train crew, who is late.
