Frankfurt The property tax return is currently putting millions of homeowners under stress. According to information from the Haus und Grund owners’ association, only 18 percent of the 36 million declarations have been received nationwide. The rest have to hurry. The data should be transmitted to the tax offices by October 31, and they have to recalculate the property tax according to a Federal Constitutional Court ruling.

Experts expect that property tax could rise significantly as a result of the reform, particularly in residential areas that are now in high demand. It is all the more important to fill out the declaration correctly. Officials always do spot checks.

Anyone who has made mistakes can be prosecuted for careless tax evasion. “Anyone who is proven to have acted with intent is at risk of being prosecuted for tax evasion,” warns Sibylle Barent, a tax expert at Haus und Grund.
