Frankfurt Worries about the US debt limit are making Wall Street investors nervous. The Dow Jones index of standard values closed 0.7 percent lower on Thursday at 33,309 points. The tech-heavy Nasdaq, on the other hand, advanced 0.2 percent to 12,328 points. The broad S&P 500 lost 0.2 percent to 4130 points.
The ongoing dispute over raising the US debt ceiling spoiled investors’ joy of positive surprises in initial jobless claims and producer prices. “There is a growing sense from economic data that interest rates will be lower as the year progresses. Without the debt ceiling uncertainty, the market would be making new highs,” said David Russell of online broker TradeStation.
“The fact is nobody really knows what to make of it. The American government debt is intertwined with our entire financial system, making it really impossible to know what will happen in the event of a default.”
