Moscow, Washington As Russian troops advance further into Ukraine’s interior, international concerns about the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant are growing. According to Ukrainian sources, Russian troops took over the area on Thursday after heavy fighting.
The spokeswoman for the White House in Washington, Jen Psaki, spoke of an “illegal and dangerous hostage situation” in the restricted area around the damaged reactor. The idea that Russia could suspend routine conservation and safety work at the nuclear waste facility is “alarming and worrying.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency said it is following the situation in Ukraine “with the greatest concern”. She called for a “maximum of restraint” from everyone involved, because an unsecured nuclear facility harbored great danger.
