Face masks significantly reduce the risk of corona infection compared to social distancing.

Berlin Researchers from Göttingen have good news and bad news when it comes to the risk of infection. The bad thing first: Even three meters away does not protect against infection with Sars-CoV-2. Even with this large distance, it takes less than five minutes indoors before an unvaccinated person can become infected in the breath of a corona infected person. The good news, however, is that it’s relatively easy to protect yourself against it.
A team from the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen (MPIDS) led by Gholamhossein Bagheri and Birte Thiede came to the conclusion in a study recently published in the specialist journal “PNAS” that face masks compared to the risk of corona infection Significantly reduce social distancing.
“We find a very low risk of infection when everyone wears a face mask, even if it does not fit perfectly on the face,” the researchers write. And if the masks are worn precisely, this improves protection even further.
