There are many people who describe themselves as “tenants by conviction”, but the number of those who would rather own their property than rent is much larger. The main reason: Many people fear that at some point they will no longer be able to afford the rent.
The home of one’s own seems like a haven of security in which the fear of being evicted does not exist in the slightest. Rationally, this is only correct to a limited extent, because in Germany rent increases in existing contracts are strictly limited by law.
And owning your own four walls costs money too – even if the loan that originally financed it has long since been repaid. Apartments and houses must be maintained and renovated at regular intervals. In addition, there are other financial stumbling blocks on the way to owning your own property.
