Volvo has officially announced that it will now bring over-the-air (OTA) update support to all its next-generation vehicles. It is said that this feature, which was introduced in fully electric models such as the XC40, will be brought to hybrid vehicles, especially the XC90, S60 and V60 ICE, in the coming period.

Volvo will bring wireless update support to its new cars!
It is stated that the 8th and final update shared by Volvo will be offered to more than 190 thousand vehicles as of this week. So users with wireless update support in Volvo cars will get the latest version of Android Automotive OS with Android 11 on their infotainment system, with new categories of apps ranging from navigation to charging and parking on Google Play. An update on digital video platforms is also expected to come in the next post.
In addition, there are many improvements regarding energy management, climate timers and mobile application functionality in the shared update. Energy management updates aim to help keep battery temperatures stable in both hot and cold weather to increase range and reduce charging times. Also, the charge percentage will be updated more frequently.
In fact, we have seen a similar service on the Tesla side before. The company has spearheaded over-the-air software updates with Model S, X, 3 and Y vehicles, ensuring that its electric cars will receive features found in newly released versions.
And it doesn’t just update the software for its entertainment and other systems (SOTA). It also updates the unit that controls the hardware (FOTA). Most automakers now offer some kind of OTA update like this. But many, such as BMW, Audi, and Fiat, only offer SOTA updates.
On the other hand, others, including GM and Ford, offer more extensive updates to their vehicle systems, allowing them to improve range, performance and other factors. Volvo seems to fall into this category as well, improving not only its navigation and entertainment systems, but also charging and other features. It also promised that the infotainment system, developed in partnership with Google, will be featured in all new models in the range.
