It has long been talked about that there is a rain of diamonds in the depths of icy planets such as Uranus and Neptune. This was proven in a laboratory experiment conducted in 2017. However, researchers reveal that the diamond rain is much more frequent.

The international group of researchers working with the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory had previously created the diamond rain effect by placing hydrogen and carbon under extremely high pressures. The new research made the conditions of an icy planet more realistic by including other elements that might be present, such as oxygen.

To simulate this chemical mix, the researchers used a familiar material: Plastic. Revealing that the material used in PET bottles is chemically similar to the conditions they want to create, the researchers used a powerful laser beam. They then observed how the X-rays bounced off the plastic.

In the experiment, the dimensions of the diamonds were observed. The very small diamonds produced in the experimental environment are called nanodiamonds. However, it is stated that much larger diamonds may form about 8 thousand kilometers below the surface of an ice giant. It is stated that these diamonds, which are said to extend to the core of the planet, can form a thick layer of diamonds.

In new experiments, the team revealed that nanodiamonds can form at lower temperatures and pressures when they incorporate oxygen. Thus, it is stated that with the presence of oxygen, diamond rains become much more likely. In this way, it has been determined that diamond rains can be encountered much more frequently, especially on icy planets.
