Brussels, Berlin The case has historical dimensions and could hardly be more politically explosive: the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines was an attack on Europe’s civilian energy infrastructure, the likes of which have not been seen since the Second World War. But in the German judiciary there are doubts as to whether the crime will ever be dealt with.

The authorship of the explosions will probably “never be clarified beyond doubt”, according to security circles. The chances of being able to provide “material evidence” are low – if only because there is little experience with “criminal work” on the seabed.

So far there are only circumstantial evidence, traces that point to possible perpetrators. Pro-Ukrainian forces are currently assumed, after Russia was initially suspected.
