Why the “Sell in May” stock market rule is meaningless today

Frankfurt In spring, many private investors remember the stock exchange rule “Sell in May and go away”. This is just one stock market wisdom among many, but it is one of the most quoted. The rhyme is completed by the addition “But remember to come back in September”.

However, stock professionals don’t believe in the recommendation to exit the stock market in May and wait until September to start investing again. Andreas Telschow, stock expert at Fidelity International, says: “Investors should not jeopardize their long-term strategy by selling and buying stocks depending on the season.” It is impossible to time the right entry and exit point for stocks.
