Frankfurt Elon Musk wants to take over Twitter. In doing so, he claims noble goals: It is about maintaining a broadly open, reliable platform.

It is still unclear whether his attack will be successful. Nobody should deny the Tesla founder a democratic attitude. At the same time, Elon Musk is almost a master of ceremonies on Twitter for his numerous followers.

Time and time again he has caused an uproar in the Bitcoin scene with a single tweet. Tesla’s extremely high rating is also clearly due to Musk’s communication skills.

That’s why the “Twitter case” is definitely an occasion to keep an eye on the tremendous power of social media. Those who dominate there have more power than many traditional media. And the providers themselves can also exert influence.

If individual users are blocked, such as Donald Trump, this may be welcomed in individual cases, but there is a fundamental problem behind it. The fight against lies and insults is almost impossible to win on social networks.

It makes a big difference who runs Twitter

At the same time, it can make a big difference how it is managed, for example who is blocked. As guardians of such platforms, and thus also as owners, one would wish for people who have few interests of their own and tend to keep a low profile in public. With traditional media, it’s seldom an advantage if the publishers push themselves to the fore with strong opinions.

Twitter is a special case, as Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine shows. Information, images, videos, opinions and scientific analyzes are exchanged there with unbelievable speed and intensity. In a situation where truth and lies have become decisive weapons of war, the responsibility of the platform operators is even greater.
