In order to avoid an impending gas shortage, many Germans rely on electric fan heaters as an alternative to heating. The sales figures have increased rapidly.

Berlin Electric fan heaters are currently in demand. In July and August 2022 alone, 358,000 units were sold in Germany, as the data and analytics company GfK announced at the request of the Handelsblatt. This corresponds to an increase of almost 60 percent compared to the first six months of the year. Between January and June, 600,000 devices went over the counter.
Compared to the previous year, the sales figures have increased by leaps and bounds. Last year, from January to August, 544,000 fan heaters were sold – in this year’s period there were 958,000 units and thus 76 percent more.
The sales figures do not bode well: The mass use of electric fan heaters could prove to be a boomerang in the current energy crisis, as an analysis by the management consultancy Oliver Wyman shows. The experts come to the conclusion that more fan heaters running could exacerbate a gas shortage situation. The authors of the study are not alone in their scenario.
