Madrid, Paris Germany and France stick together in the energy crisis – that is the message that Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Emmanuel Macron like to send out. On the Day of German Unity, the Federal Chancellor received the French President for a working dinner in Berlin. Cooperation on energy policy was one of the items on the agenda.
Behind the scenes, however, there is a lot of crunching on one topic: It is about the construction of the Midcat pipeline from Spain through the Pyrenees to France, through which, according to the federal government’s ideas, gas and later green hydrogen could flow to German industrial sites.
Berlin and Madrid want to resume the project that was stopped in 2019, but Paris is opposed to it. According to information from the Handelsblatt, Midcat was also discussed at the Scholz and Macron dinner on Monday evening, but apparently there was no rapprochement.
