Google encourages Android manufacturers to update
Google CEO Sundar Pichai took the podium on October 30 (that is, yesterday). During his testimony, Pichai provided information that provides a better behind-the-scenes look at how Google works and may help explain users’ frustration with not seeing security updates for Android phones.
According to Pichai, Google financially encourages manufacturers to update their phones. Companies that keep their phones updated with the latest security patches see a higher share of revenue from Google services than those that don’t.
In other words, the amount of money a manufacturer makes from you using Google products on its device depends on how often it keeps that device updated with security patches. This means that Google is deliberately empowering manufacturers to be better at updating phones, which is something we didn’t know before.
Why is iPhone used longer than Android phones?
One of the questions on many people’s minds is why do Android users switch phones more frequently than iPhone users?
We knew that Google mandated two years of updates for any Android phone and strongly encouraged support longer than that. But we didn’t know there were financial incentives involved.
This statement leaves us scratching our heads when we think about companies like Sony, Motorola, OnePlus, and others providing only minimal updates to some of their phones. However, when we think and analyze the incident, we reach a logical conclusion.
If these companies prefer the money coming from users to buy a new phone instead of the money they will receive to keep the phones updated – that is, if this money is more – then the pieces fall into place. If that’s the case, it’s an easy decision not to update the phone.
