Why China is reconciling Saudi Arabia and Iran

Istanbul The two regional powers, Saudi Arabia and Iran, are in the process of ending their years of enmity. A high-level meeting in Beijing between the two countries will soon be followed by the opening of the respective embassies. The Chinese government had been mediating behind the scenes for months.

Trade is to be revived, direct flights between the two countries will be possible, and visas will be issued more easily. This is particularly important for Iranians who plan to attend Hajj in the summer. The pilgrimage takes millions of Muslims to Mecca in Saudi Arabia every year. For the Iranians, this has so far involved detours and a lot of bureaucracy.

Both countries are dependent on oil exports, which has contributed to their rivalry in the past. Due to international sanctions because of the controversial nuclear program, however, Iran is largely excluded from the market. If the country could dump its oil production on the market via Saudi Arabia, both countries would benefit.
