Berlin The third dose of vaccination against the Sars-Cov-2 virus already strengthens the immune response so sustainably that there is long-term protection against serious illness. A recent study at Rockefeller University in New York has confirmed this again.

The third dose increases the immune system’s ability to produce a broader spectrum of virus-neutralizing antibodies. This included those capable of neutralizing omicrons, although the vaccine was not specifically designed for this variant. With only two doses, such effects were far less pronounced.

However, the protection against infection and thus also against the transmission of the virus was undermined by the omicron variant. Already a few weeks after the third vaccination, it drops significantly on average. This is one of the reasons why it is currently being discussed whether a second booster might now be recommended for broad sections of the population.
