When will Apple use the 2nm process?

Apple and Qualcomm, one of the biggest players in the mobile chip market, are pumped for the 2nm processor. According to a new leak, companies in talks with TSMC are actively working on 2nm and smaller processes in this context.

Apple and TSMC are in talks for 2nm

In slides prepared by TSMC, it was stated that Apple was “working on TS2nm,” referring to TSMC’s 2nm node. This shows that the company has started to actively design chips that will use 2nm technology.

2nm chips are expected to power the iPhone lineup in 2025 and will likely launch with the iPhone 17 family. The 3nm and 5nm processes developed by TSMC provided significant performance and efficiency increases to Apple A series chips. 2nm is also expected to reach new highs.

TSMC first started developing the 2nm process in 2019. It plans to start mass production in the second half of 2025. 2nm means that transistors are getting smaller so more can fit on a chip. This promises more powerful features and longer battery life.

In addition to Apple, it was stated that Qualcomm also met with TSMC and received information about the 2nm process. Qualcomm aims to expand the Snapdragon XR2 series, which powers the XR chips, and also use this process in Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.

Cooperation may not be limited to 2nm. It has been reported that TSMC has started R&D work on the even smaller 1.4nm architecture by 2027. Apple may be the first company to use this.
