What’s the deal with the “Z”? How a new symbol of Russian war propaganda emerged

Berlin It can be seen again and again on the videos of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and it is also emblazoned on the photos of the aggressor’s shot-up war equipment: the large white Z. It has now become the symbol of Russian nationalism, the symbol for the supposed strength of Russia and an expression of the imperialist idea that Russia must protect its “brother peoples” such as the Ukraine from the West.

The marking is also one of the indications that Russia had decided on its new war of aggression against Ukraine long before the day of the invasion. The signs had already been observed during the large-scale maneuvers in the border area with Ukraine and Belarus and discussed on social networks. It has been suggested that the white bars are some sort of primitive friend-or-foe identifier.
